Kone

KONE will likely be a new name to most people out there, but if the rest of the world catches on to what Los Angeles has already figured out, that could change soon. Originally from Topanga Canyon and now rooted in East Hollywood for the last decade, KONE is a native Angeleno poised to do his hometown proud. And even if you've never heard the name, you've probably heard the sounds; KONE's tracks were played at Low End Theory long before he ever did.

KONE has spent the last several years putting on parties, releasing his own music, steadily remixing a vast array of artists, rocking up and down the West Coast and New York City, and always digging for records along the way. In 2010, he really started turning heads by putting out a digital 12" (Welcome to LA), a 4-track EP (Dirty Dishes) and a slew of remixes from Gonjasufi, MIA, and even Gucci Mane. But 2011 looks to be his biggest year yet.

KONE provided a burner of a track ("FUNK 3481") for the critically acclaimed Starship 27 Vol. 2 compilation project, whose contributor list reads like a Who's Who of the future of the funk in all its forms. He also provided a colorful track to fellow Low End Theory luminary Open Mike Eagle's stellar album Rappers Will Die of Natural Causes, just released on Hellfyre Club.

"Those are both great projects that I would listen to and support even if I had no contribution, but to have been a part of them is important to me. They will both be relevant for a long time," says KONE. "I feel that way about my record The Tractatus as well. It's right for right now, but right now could be any time. I'm a harsh critic of my own stuff and I know I'm gonna like these songs forever."

You can catch KONE at his monthly residency every 4th Thursday at the Verdugo Bar in Glassell Park, along with legendary Detroit DJ and producer House Shoes, and his long-time collaborator Fat Albert Einstein, who is, by the way, the only featured guest to appear on The Tractatus.
